What can I compost?
Garden Organic - the national charity for organic growing
Good stuff (the best stuff)
  Waste from the vegetable garden
  Bedding from vegetarian pets
  Kitchen waste, fruit and vegetables thrown out from greengrocers
  Soft hedge prunings like privet or beech
  Harder woody prunings if shredded small
  Weeds
  Old plants and flowers
  Strawy farmyard and horse manure

Hot stuff (speeds up your heap)
  Grass mowings (But don't add in layers more than 10cm deep)
  Nettle tops
  Chicken and pigeon manure

Don't use
  
Meat and fish
   Coal ash
   Lots of leaves
   Nappies
   Lots of paper
   Dog and cat faeces
   Metal and glass
   Persistent weeds like bindweed
   Diseased plants and weed seeds
