Storage of organically produced crops
(Funding body: DEFRA)
Aims of project
- Identify and review current methods of storage by UK organic farmers and growers.
- Review and assess the suitability of conventional methods of storage which
might become appropriate for organic growers in the future
Results of Project
- A report was published and an executive summary can be seen here (PDF 14Kb). The full version is available from HDRA and a brief summary of the practical results appears below.
- The information is available as a base to produce a series of technical guidelines
- The information was used to identify research priorities
Summary of the Practical Results
- Organic crops can be stored using the same methods as conventional crops
- There is some increased risk for higher storage losses with organic produce
- Specific problems with pests and diseases can generally be dealt with by good organic husbandry
- Research priorities identified include:
- assessing organic crop varieties/seed for storage potential,
- investigation of biological control storage methodsl nutrient compost
