Economics of organic farming

A project of HDRA's Economics, Marketing and Policy team.

(Funding body: DEFRA OFO189)

Business Analyst

This DEFRA funded project started in December 2002 and initially run for three years. It is a sub-contract from the Institute of Rural Studies (IRS), Aberystwyth, Wales.
HDRA will be responsible for the annual collection and analysis of physical and financial data from 12 farms which grow organic field vegetables. The data will be collected according to Farm Business Survey (FBS) techniques and processed to produce whole farm accounts and economic efficiency and sustainability measures such as net farm income and management and investment income. In addition gross margins are calculated for organic vegetable crops grown on the farms. These measures are used to analyse and report on factors affecting profitability and trends in performance. This information is used to write reports on the economics of organic vegetable production. This will feed into the larger project, which collects data from other organic enterprises: arable, dairy and other livestock and compares the economic performance of the organic farms with conventional ones.

Results will be published on our website and are used to inform presentations to advisors, farmers and policy makers. Gross margins and enterprise costings are used to update data in the Organic farms Management Handbook.
