Seed Security Programme

The Seed Security Programme (SSP) is run by the PELUM (Participatory Ecological Land-Use Management) Association, a regional network working in East and Southern Africa. The Programme was established in 1999 with support from Garden Organic and other members of the UK Food Group.
The SSP aims to promote and increase active local seed saving, improve access to and availability of seed and planting material, and to conserve agricultural biodiversity. The project aims to help establish community seed saving and exchange networks, thereby increasing food supply and improving the lives of farming communities in the region. It has developed and supported communication, training, information sharing and where possible seed exchange, between international and local organisations working directly with farmers and gardeners.
