What is Garden Organic?
Garden Organic is the working name of the Henry Doubleday Research Association (HDRA). We are a registered charity, and Europe's largest organic membership organisation. We are dedicated to researching and promoting organic gardening, farming and food.
- Our Research and Development Section is working to improve commercial organic growing in Britain.
- Our Information and Education Section provides advice to its over 30,500 members and regularly helps the media, industry and statutory bodies. Garden Organic staff write books and articles for the national press, and appear regularly on television and radio.
- Our Sustainable Waste Management team promote home composting through Master Composter schemes and research related to home composting. Find out about Master Composter schemes in your area on our dedicated website www.homecomposting.org.uk.
- Our three organic display gardens at Ryton near Coventry, Yalding near Maidstone, and Audley End near Saffron Walden, are open to the public and attract thousands of visitors each year. We also have food, gardening and gift shops at our three sites, selling one of the best ranges of quality organic products in the UK, and we have restaurants at Ryton and Yalding.
- Our Heritage Seed Library saves hundreds of old and unusual vegetable varieties for posterity, also distributing them to its members. Anyone can join.
- Our International Programme carries out research and advisory work with organisations across the tropics to develop and promote organic practices of benefit to small, scale farmers. Our Overseas Organic Support Group helps to fund this work.
- We work with Chase Organics Ltd to produce The Organic Gardening Catalogue, offering, by mail order, the very best selection of organic products in the country. We also run The Organic Wine Club in association with Vinceremos Wines. Catalogues are available on request.
- We hold National Potato Days, kindly sponsored by Waitrose, National Organic Gardening Weekends and dozens of other events.
- At time of writing, Garden Organic with its associated trading company Organic Enterprises Ltd, has over 150 members of staff, who continually strive to promote excellence in all things organic.
